MY FAVOURITE SIMPLE PLEASURES AT CHRISTMAS
Christmas truly is the most magical time of Year and, even with the Year that we’ve had, there’s still lots to enjoy. Regardless of your age, I hope that this Christmas, you get to spend some time surrounded by your closest family members or friends, with a lot of good food and the prospect of having a copious amount of festive fun!
When I think back to every Christmas, they’re always filled with such joy and happiness. From unwrapping presents, to that first cup of tea on Christmas morning, to getting dressed up in sparkly attire for Christmas dinner, and then watching a Christmas film while someone inevitably falls asleep on the sofa after the day’s antics!
I definitely take pleasure in the small details at Christmas, so here are a few of my Simple Pleasures at Christmas…
Scents - My absolute favourite winter scent/candle is the “Yankee Candy Cane Forest” one! The smell of melted chocolate, stewing apples, cinnamon, orange and the smoke from the fire – all remind me of the festive period too!
Sounds – You can find my actual Christmas playlist (if it’s of interest) here… But my utter favourites (in no particular order) are, “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank Sinatra, “Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!” by Dean Martin & “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt (to name a few!)
Sights – I’m an absolute sucker for Fairy Lights and Christmas tree, as well as a load of great telly/films! My favourite films to watch over the Christmas period are all of the "Harry Potters", "Elf", "The Holiday", all the "Home Alone’s", "Jack Frost", "The Family Stone" & "Die Hard" as well as any "Christmas special" going and of course “Father Christmas” and “The Snowman” - they are usually on whilst we open presents!
Tastes – Roast potatoes and Yorkshires are my favourite savoury Christmas treats but… I also don’t mind a sprout here and there. It has to be said though, that ultimately my heart is with the sweet treats! I do have a very sweet tooth, I just can’t help it! All the Christmas chocolate (especially Quality Streets’ Strawberry Delight or Orange Crèmes!), puddings, cake and other naughty treats, I’m there with bells on! I don’t usually drink much (because I’m a massive light weight!) but a sloe or mulled wine (especially when warm) or a "Chocolate Baileys", now those I can definitely get on board with!
Activities – In terms of being at home, I love going for long morning or afternoon walks, and snuggling in front of the fire and I also absolutely love a card/board game, quiz’s, unless in teams, not so much, but bring me "Monopoly", "Dobble", "Guess Who" or a game of "Jack Black", and I’ll give it my best shot!
Traditions – We always put our tree up on, or before, the 1st December, and I send out my Christmas cards early too, I feel I channel my inner Pam a little, see here ("Gavin & Stacey" fans will know, whoops!). A drive or walk around the local town to see the fairy lights is a must too! Usually myself and Adam visit a Christmas Market or two - Bath & Clevedon are our favourites! But this year is, of course, a little different, with a lot of them online, but it’s still been wonderful to support Small Businesses in this way (the power of the internet eh?! – I’m starting to sound my age now!).
I enjoyed writing this Blog Post so much and can’t wait for 2021, Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year Folks!
