24 HOURS IN MARGATE & RAMSGATE
Last week I arranged to go with my Grandad to meet with his friend in Margate. My grandad lives down the road from me, but Margate is a good few hours away from both of our houses, in Surrey. I fancied a day of exploring and keeping him company and Grandad was going to be reunited with his good friend, after not having seen him in a long time, so it was a win-win. We teamed up for the journey and hit the road...
The drive was extremely pleasant and once we arrived, our surroundings had such a unique feel to them. Surrey is unbelievably hilly and full of trees and forests. Margate & Ramsgate, in a rather stark comparison, are so flat and there are countless vast open spaces! It was really refreshing to see such a different landscape.
Not only did we get to explore the town and coastline (which I'll get to in a minute), but my grandad's friend also gave us a tour of his home, which I found absolutely fascinating. He's a painter and his house was like Aladdin's cave! Full of treasures he'd collected over the years, endless paint supplies and a range of his work dating back 10 years, at least!
The house was cram-packed with goodies, and to both of our surprise, he also had an art studio out in his back garden too! The walls, from top to bottom, were absolutely covered in his art work! And I loved it. It was so inspiring and refreshing to be in someone else's creative space. It even made me want to re-look at my own office.
I studied Fine Art at Sixth Form and many years later, without the deadlines/guidelines, I found myself looking at his vast collection of paintbrushes, pallet knives and linseed oil, with the smell of turpentine in the air, wanting to create something again, with as much freedom and creativity as I could throw at it!
They say "Choose a Job You Love, and You Will Never Have To Work a Day in Your Life" and I 100% feel like that with my Photography business. Whilst following customer wants and desires, I still have so much creative freedom and licence to capture beautiful images and share such wonderful memories. I am so lucky that my couples trust me in the way that they do.
Whilst we were there we were shown around Kingsgate Bay in Broadstairs with its truly spectacular cliff edges and caves. We also explored Ramsgate Main Beach and the town centre. And last, but by no means least, I got to dig around in Petticoat Lane Emporuim, no photographs were allowed to be taken, but if you're anything like me and love a good antique/jumble sale - this is the spot for you.
By the time we had been given the grand tour by our guide, I felt totally refreshed to get back to my work, having seen so many inspiring and beautiful things along the way. Full of character, charm, stunning views, an epic coastline and overall "seaside town feel"... I'd highly recommend a trip to this wonderful coast!
